Anticipation!
Flying overnight on the plane to get to Brazil I stared at the GPS on the back of the seat that always showed exactly where the plane was on a map of North and South America. It still didn’t seem real. Flying over the ocean at night, you looked out and saw nothing but black. Then finally around 3am, we flew over the coast of South America. Looking down you could see a perfect outline of the beaches glowing orange, and the resorts and houses glittering with their lights on.
That’s when the trip finally started to seem real, over a new continent so many miles away from home watching the outline of the coast pass underneath. Then a few hours later somewhere over the Amazon, the sun began to rise. It was a beautiful sight and my first real glimpse of Brazil, with the stars still shining in the sky and the sun lighting up the horizon just barely making the cloud covered treetops visible. Finally for the first time I actually believed I was going to Brazil, and wasn’t just talking about it like everyone had been doing for the past year! The wait was finally over, let the adventure begin!

Voando pela noite no avião para chegar no Brasil, olhei no GPS nas
costas da poltrona que sempre mostrava exatamente onde o avião estava
em um mapa das Américas do Norte e do Sul. Não parecia de verdade.
Voando por um oceano à noite, você olha pra fora, e não vê nada além
de preto. Então, finalmente pelas 3 da manhã, nós voamos pela costa da
América do Sul. Olhando para baixo, dava pra ver um contorno perfeito
de praias brilhando em laranja, e as pousadas e casas brilhando com
suas luzes acesas. Foi quando a viagem finalmente começou a parecer
real, sobre um novo continente, tantas milhas longe de casa, vendo o
contorno da costas passar lá em baixo. Então, algumas horas de pois,
em algum lugar sobre a Amazônia, o sol começou a nascer. Foi uma bela
visão, e meu primeiro lampejo real do Brasil, com as estrelas ainda
brilhando no céu e o sol iluminando o horizonte, e mal fazendo as
árvores cobertas por nuvens aparecerem. Finalmente, pela primeira vez,
eu realmente acreditei que estava indo ao Brasil, e não apenas falando
sobre ele como todo mundo esteve fazendo ano passado! A espera
finalmente acabou, que a aventura comece!

Into the heart of darknes – the concrete jungle! Complete with natural science museums, street market shopping near the Marcado Municipal, samba and caipirinhas, and a late night venture to the local festa juninha, the city has welcomed us with open arms and warm hearts. Our friends from the Instituto Sangari have hosted us with great smiles and my new Brazilian friends have shared their lives and passions. At dinner, Katia, Elaine, Mike, Kelly, and I shared laugh after laugh through broken English and Portuguese, smiling at our efforts to share the limited time we have. On our last night, our Brazlian friends shared an incredible gift with each of us – a scent of Brazil to take home and remember. Maracuja para mim!

Brasilia and Manaus
Brasilia e Manaus! What a contrast! One city with such a rich history of the colonial influences in Brazilian culture and another city representing the growing political future of the world’s fifth largest economy… In Brasilia, I experienced the architecture, political infrastructure, and commerical development that represent the modernization of Brazilian culture over the last fifty years. The opportunity to visit Valeria’s suburban school was enlightening and exciting. It is clear in the structure and atmosphere of the school that this is a place where great developments are taking place. Valeria’s hard work is evident in her classroom and among her colleagues. We wish her all the support and success in the world! Today, in Manaus, we were introduced to a whole new ball game. One of the first things I learned about the Amazonian capital is that there is only one accesible highway connecting to other cities by ground transportation. Manaus, other thanby language and air plane, is isolated from the rest of Brazilian culture. Thus, its local culture and history is unique to the nation and extremely important to its historical development. Between the planned blocks of the city center by English design and the French-inspired architecture and design of the famous Teatro Amazonas, Brazil’s entwined history with its European colonial sisters is beautifully demonstrated. Along the same street can be found the winding street market, alive with local visitors as the sun sets over the Rio Negro.

No coração das trevas – a selva de pedra! Completa com museus de
ciência natural, mercado ambulante perto do Mercado Municipal, samba e
caipirinhas, e uma aventura tarde da noite para a festa junina local,
a cidade nos recebeu de braços abertos e corações aquecidos. Nossos
amigos do Instituto Sangari nos hospedaram com grandes sorrisos e meus
novos amigos brasileiros contaram suas vidas e gostos. No jantar,
Katia, Elaine, Mike, Kelly, e eu, dividimos risada após risada através
de um português e inglês capenga, sorrindo pelos nossos esforços para
dividir o tempo limitado que tínhamos. Na nossa última noite, nossos
amigos brasileiros deram um incrível presente para cada um de nós – um
aroma do Brasil para levar para casa e lembrar. Maracujá para mim!
Brasilia e Manaus

Brasilia e Manaus! Que contraste! Uma cidade com uma história tão rica
das influências coloniais na cultura brasileira, e outra cidade
representando o crescente futuro político da quinta maior economia
mundial… Em Brasilia, eu vi a arquitetura, infra-estrutura política,
e desenvolvimento comercial que representa a modernização da cultura
brasileira nos últimos cinquenta anos. A oportunidade de visitar a
escola suburbana da Valeria foi iluminadora e excitante. É claro na
estrutura e atmosfera da escola que lá é um lugar onde grandes
progressos estão ocorrendo. O trabalho duro de Valeria é evidente em
sua sala de aula e pelos seus colegas. Nós desejamos à ela toda a
ajuda e sucesso no mundo! Hoje, em Manaus, nós fomos apresentados à um
jogo de bola completamente novo. Uma das primeiras coisas que eu
aprendi sobre a capital amazonense é que só existe uma rodovia
acessível que vai até outras cidades por transporte terrestre. Manaus,
fora pela língua e aviões está isolada do resto da cultura brasileira.
Portante, essa cultura e história locais são únicas no país e
extremamente importantes para seu desenvolvimento histórico. Entre as
quadras planejadas do centro da cidade por design inglês e a
arquitetura e design inspirados na frança do famoso Teatro Amazonas, a
história do Brasil entrelaçada com suas irmãs coloniais européias é
lindamente demonstrada. Pela mesma rua pode se encontrar o mercado de
ria. vivo com visitante locais enquanto o sol se pões sobre o Rio
Negro.
